April 2020 prescription refill support for Indians stranded in the US during the Covid pandemic

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, OGKTMA launched a vital community initiative — "ASK OGKTMA — COVID Q&A", a helpline dedicated to answering COVID-related queries. This project brought together a panel of experienced medical professionals to provide accurate, timely, and compassionate guidance to individuals and families during one of the most challenging times in recent history.

The helpline served as a beacon of support, offering expert medical advice via email to those navigating the uncertainty of COVID-19. People could send in their questions along with their contact information, and a physician from the panel would respond with appropriate guidance. This personalized outreach helped to bridge the gap between misinformation and reliable health communication.

Key highlights of the initiative

  • Organized by Sujeeth R. Punnam, MD and Bharath Naravetla, MD
  • Coordinated by Sushma Nakka, MD and Sujeeth R. Punnam, MD
  • A panel of over 30 highly qualified physicians from various specialties volunteered their time and expertise
  • Backed by AAPI leaders Dr. Suresh Reddy (President) and Dr. Anupama Gotimukula (Vice President)

Purpose and impact

The project was rooted in OGKTMA's mission to support public health efforts while staying connected to their Indian roots. By addressing COVID-19 concerns — ranging from symptoms and treatment to vaccine safety and mental health — the helpline empowered individuals to make informed health decisions.

This collaborative effort highlighted the strength of the global medical community, especially alumni associations, in times of crisis. It is a testament to the commitment of OGKTMA's members to give back, not only to their homeland but to the world community.
